500 _aLocative media is an emerging field of practice concerned with the convergence between the geographical space and data space where not only information is geographically specific but so is the person accessing it. This essay examines how locative media is currently being developed in artistic, commercial and military contexts. By exploring a range of perspectives it is possible to gauge the wide and complex issues locative media raises with regards to its social and political implications in contemporary society. Locative media has the potential to change the way in which we perceive and interact with the world around us, it facilitates the possibility of new forms of decentralized activity that challenge traditional hierarchal structures within society. Examples from around the world indicate how people are beginning to utilize locative technologies as a means of resistance and as a form of power. At the same time governments are utilizing locative technologies to usher in a new era of discreet and ubiquitous surveillance.
