Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

This book explores 10 unique facets of Internet health and safety, including physical safety, information security, and the responsible use of technology, offering takeaways from interviews with experts in the field and suggestions for proactively improving users' Internet safety.

The Internet has become for many people--especially students and young adults--an essential and intrinsic part of their lives. It makes information available to be shared worldwide, at any time; enables learning about any topic; and allows for instantaneous communication. And it provides endless entertainment as well. But the benefits of online access are accompanied by serious potential risks.

This book covers the key elements of Internet health and safety, including physical safety, information security, and the responsible use of technology. It begins with an introductory essay that gives readers the necessary conceptual framework, and then explains specific topics such as cyberbullying, file sharing, online predators, Internet fraud, and obscene and offensive content. The book also answers readers' questions in a "Q & A" section with a subject expert and includes a directory of resources that provides additional information and serves as a gateway to further study.

Includes bibliographical references at the end of each chapters and index.

School Library Journal Review

Gr 9 Up-Schell, a professor and director of Cybercrime Initiatives at Laurentian University in Ontario, Canada, has written many works on hacking and IT topics. This volume sets out to introduce online health and safety topics in a way that young adult students can understand. It contains eight chapters, organized into two sections: online issues involving harm to persons and macrosystem issues regarding online health and safety. Issues in the first section include identity theft, cyberbullying, online predators, and addiction, while the second section addresses subjects including social media, health records, censorship, and copyright. Each chapter, ranging from 40 to 60 pages, contains an overview, definitions of key concepts, and a Q&A with an expert and covers current problems and controversies and potential treatments, interventions, and solutions for the issue. Each chapter concludes with a hefty references list. The volume succeeds in providing a digestible overview on topics that can be technologically, legally, and morally complex, which sets it apart from other works on these concepts. However, writings about technology can quickly become outdated, and this will likely be no exception. VERDICT A good overview on topics related to online safety for a young adult audience.
