Library Journal Review

Superstudio, a six-member Italian architectural team active from 1966 to 1978, was notorious for its radically anti-materialist polemics and pranks. The exhibition "Superstudio: Life Without Objects," organized this year by the Design Museum in London (and showing in various locations in New York City this fall), gave viewers a chance to judge whether the global urban/suburban dystopia that Superstudio foresaw three decades ago has in some ways come to pass and, if so, whether it behooves architects and society to reconsider Superstudio's nihilistic proposals to cease our acquisitive capitalist ways and start over from scratch. The book accompanying this exhibit summarizes Superstudio's 12-year assault on the architectural establishment. In anthology format, it combines essays, film storyboards, photos, and collages depicting the team's startling, darkly satirical, unbuildable projects. Superstudio's message remains timely in this era of sprawl, hyper-capitalism, and corporate globalism, but unfortunately most American readers will be stymied by this book's disjointed and peculiarly avant-garde mix of poetically surreal prose, hauntingly evocative but uncaptioned images, and impenetrable, deadpan humor. Nevertheless, as the only published survey available of this marginal yet influential architectural team, Superstudio is recommended for academic and special collections.-David Soltesz, Cuyahoga Cty.
