CHOICE Review

The newest edition of this textbook (first published in 2007) covers a significant amount of ground in a clear, easy-to-read manner that will be helpful both to students in a classroom setting and to home-recording enthusiasts (whose numbers are ever increasing). Izhaki (currently, audio engineering, SAE Institute, London, UK) begins by discussing the process of mixing--including placement in frequency, level, and stereo domains--and procedural approaches on completing mixes. Most significant, the author gives details on different types of equipment (such as monitors and consoles) used in the mixing process. He also discusses the different type of processors, including ones for dynamic range and reverb, among others, in both their hardware and software versions. The range of software "plug-ins" is not solely within one manufacturer's framework, so the discussion is completely nonbiased. Izhaki's book differs from others in that it provides Internet support of example mixes; readers can listen to sound clips from mixes discussed in the book and also common mixing problems. This superb approach serves to reinforce the reading material. The book focuses on mixing, and it does so very well; however, readers also interested in the recording process will need to consult other sources. Summing Up: Essential. Undergraduates and above. T.
