CHOICE Review

A handsome book on British designer and decorator, Clarice Cliff, written as a reference book for collectors of her colorful pottery, which reflected the uninhibited spirit of the 1920s and 30s. Working at the A.J. Wilkinson earthenware factory in the pottery manufacturing area of Stoke on Kent, Cliff hand painted designs on inexpensive utilitarian pieces produced by the factory. Bizarre was the name of one distinctive and eye-catching style that she created, and it was expressed in several designs. Market forces dictated a continuous flow of new designs through the 1920s and until late 1935, when the Bizarre name was phased out, though Cliff continued to work on new lines for the factory as an industrial designer. Chapters in this book, which are designated by years, describe the designs of each year's production, with identifying stock numbers. The book also chronicles Cliff's fascinating life, the development of her art, and its magnitude and diversity. This well-written, excellent source book of pottery designs of the Art Deco period contains 80 magnificent color photos of the pottery; also a complete catalog of markings, shapes, and pattern numbers. Levels: graduate and undergraduate. -M. Negoro, University of Connecticut
