CHOICE Review

Gibson (a screenwriter) and McDonnell (one of Ralph Bakshi's students at Manhattan's School of Visual Arts) provide a highly entertaining and visually stunning tribute. The design reflects the title, as illustrations (many created specifically for this book) are crammed into every nook and cranny, illuminating the broad range of Bakshi's work from sensitive drawings to outrageous broad animation cells to oil and acrylic paintings and mixed media work. The adventure begins with Bakshi's biography--the son of immigrants, he gained his first artistic training from a book he stole from the public library. Through a friend, Bakshi landed a job with Terrytoons, and the rest is history. In addition to his work on Terrytoons (Hashimoto, The Deputy Dawg Show, The Astronut Show, James Hound, and others), Bakshi was responsible for the first X-rated animated film (the famous Fritz the Cat), Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures, and dozens of other works for film and television. Includes a foreword by Quentin Tarantino and a filmography of the Terrytoons episodes and Bakshi's work for Paramount Pictures Cartoon Studios (formerly Famous Studios). Summing Up: Highly recommended. All collections. E. K. Mix Butler University
