Francis Bacon (1909-1992) was one of the great figurative painters of the twentieth century. This book provides a thorough account of the life and work of this complex and conflicted artist, whose paintings retain their visceral impact and relevance today.
Essays by international scholars provide new insights into Bacon's art and life, and some fifty art works from every decade of his career - from the pensive and shocking works of the 1940s to the exuberantly coloured and visceral large paintings of the 1970s and '80s - show Bacon's unique representations of the human body through his mastery of paint.
Over 150 additional illustrations portray his studio, friends and lovers, and reveal the diversity of his source materials, from Velázquez to the motion photos of Eadweard Muybridge. This is the catalogue for an eponymous exhibition: Australia's first major retrospective devoted to the postwar British figurative painter, held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales (2012-13). Despite Bacon's antipodean family ties (his father was born in Adelaide), the artist never traveled to Australia; institutional attention to his work has been scant on the continent. Thus, this handsome catalogue presents Bacon's work in a straightforward, chronological manner that acknowledges the prodigious contributions of previous Bacon retrospectives and effectively introduces new audiences to the artist's oeuvre and its art historical reception. The book's first half comprises four essays, two of which, authored by curator Anthony Bond and Margarita Cappock, respectively, lucidly survey Bacon's career and provide detailed analysis of his studio surroundings and idiosyncratic working practices. Martin Harrison and Rebecca Daniels provide a novel and informative essay on Bacon's interaction, in England, with his Australian peers Roy de Maistre, Sidney Nolan, and Brett Whiteley. Finally, Ernst van Alphen muses on the philosophical and psychological significance of Bacon's paintings. The second half of this intelligently and stylishly produced publication is devoted to color reproductions and pithy but enlightening discussion of each of the 50-plus works featured in the exhibition.
