Library Journal Review

Recently, there has been a wave of renewed interest in handmade bags and purses. Fancy and utilitarian bags alike have been used by men and women throughout the ages, and their styles have changed with the tides of fashion. These two books by experienced craft designers reflect that vast spectrum by featuring an eclectic mix of projects for retro, ethnic, and contemporary chic bags. Galvin combines basic leathercraft with embellishments from other media to make mostly large and colorful bags. Tudor's interest in textile arts is evident in her small and elegant purses, many inspired by historic examples. She also encourages original design by including only the most general instructions for different types of purses; her illustrations of bags from various cultures are particularly fine. Both books offer new and interesting material and will be welcome in all public libraries. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
