CHOICE Review
Eargle has other excellent books to his credit, e.g., Sound Recording (CH, May '77), and this one continues in the same vein. The book is not intended for the casual listener or audiophile. However, the first chapter on acoustical fundamentals is so well organized and well written that anyone with a technical background and an inquisitive nature will find it informative and interesting. Eargle continues in a logical manner outlining the requirements for successful recording. Some of the components stressed are microphones, stereophonic techniques, audio transmission systems, loudspeakers, monitoring equipment, signal processing devices, classical and popular recording, analog magnetic and disc recording, and digital recording. The book would be useful for both neophytes and professionals in the recording business, and is highly recommended for acquisition by technical libraries.-S.
