CHOICE Review
This is a striking visual record of Sonia Delaunay's career. The juxtaposition of Delaunay's sketches, many seen here for the first time, with original fabrics and completed garments provides a stunning presentation of the artist's work. Delaunay's path-breaking experiments with color and geometrical forms are chronicled in numerous and beautifully reproduced color illustrations. However, it is disappointing that Damase fails to analyze fully the artistic consequences of Delaunay's career. He relies heavily on anecdotal material and, although this is interesting, it needs to be embedded in a larger context. The rich history of the artist's work and the creative challenge she posed to the fashion world remain largely unexplored. Level: lower-division undergraduate. -B. A.
