CHOICE Review
A very attractively produced catalog of a one-man exhibition that originated in 1990 at the Newport Harbor (California) Art Museum. Although such catalogs are necessarily limited in scope, this is a good example of the type of instant art history currently being written. It stands out because of essays by no fewer than six critics, including Peter Schjeldahl and Thomas McEvilley, whose insights place Tony Cragg in the midst of current tendencies in art such as process art, site-specific installations, and environmentally aware sculpture. With an extensive biography and bibliography, and with 150 illustrations--110 in color--this volume superbly documents the artist's development. The supporting essays address larger issues, such as the responsibility of artists to their world and their environment. This is a handsome book that does not lose track of its central focal point, a provocative younger artist whose work is explored in depth by knowledgeable critics, presenting their opinions in a context larger than that of a one-man art exhibition. -K.
