Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:
Psycholinguistics, the study of the psychology of language, studies how we speak, read, remember, learn and understand language. This textbook examines each of these aspects of language in detail. It emphasizes how data from a number of sources are used to generate theories of language performance. In addition to conventional psychology experiments, it emphasizes the cognitive neuropsychology of language by showing how studies of the effects of brain damage on linguistic performance can inform our understanding of intact language processing. The book also examines in depth the impact of influential connectionist modelling. It also provides an integrative overview of how the components of the language system combine together.

CHOICE Review
In this textbook (first edition, CH, Sep'96, 34-0605), Harley (Univ. of Dundee, Scotland) provides a thorough and readable introduction to the psychology of language. The book is organized in five sections: "Introduction," "The Biological and Developmental Bases of Language," "Word Recognition," "The Meaning and Using of Language," and "Production and Other Aspects of Language." The 15 chapters cover, among other things, history and methods, language foundations, bilingualism, reading and spelling, sentence processing, word meaning, and text processing and comprehension. Each chapter ends with a summary, questions, and further reading. Fully revised since the last edition, this book also has a readable appendix on connectionism, a glossary, references, and separate author and subject indexes. Summing Up: Highly recommended.
