Library Journal Review
The last couple of decades have seen new or renovated museums, libraries, and concert halls figuring prominently as "statement architecture," attention-grabbing buildings showcasing the unleashed creativity of today's top architects. Architecture journalist Jones (The New Modern House) rightly identifies structures associated with travel as also among those experiencing a contemporary renaissance. Jones assembles some 35 nicely illustrated case studies grouped by transportation mode: air, road, water, and rail. Most of these eye-popping designs-e.g., for airports, parking garages, ferry and rail terminals-are in Europe and Asia; many of them push building technology and contemporary aesthetics to the limit. Architects range from international superstar Zaha Hadid to lower-profile regional and local firms. Jones's text tends toward the perfunctory but is augmented by five topical essays by experts in various transportation and building fields. No similar survey covering the gamut of transportation architecture has appeared in ten years; this one will serve professional and academic collections seeking to fill that gap.-David Soltesz, Cuyahoga Cty.
