CHOICE Review

For those who have wondered how letters are designed and produced for electric signs, gravestones, stained glass, embroidery, books, and more, Haslam (Univ. of Brighton, UK) here explains, identifies, and illustrates nearly every possible way letters are created and used. An established graphic designer and teacher, Haslam previously wrote Bookdesign (2006) and coauthored Type and Typography (2nd ed., CH, Mar'06, 43-3806; 1st ed., CH, Jan'03, 40-2572). Lettering follows in their footsteps. Lushly designed by Haslam, and visually rich with photographs by Daniel Alexander, this is a reference guide to every imaginable form and format of the art of lettering. Arranged in seven chapters, it highlights common practices of lettering related to hand drawn and painted; type; printing; art techniques; molded or casted; textiles; and animation and motion graphics. Haslam admits that he cannot cover every type and format of lettering, but he certainly tries in this excellent overview of the wealth of methods available and how they are used. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-division undergraduates through graduate students, two-year technical program students, general readers, and professionals. N. J. Quinlan Nova Southeastern University
