CHOICE Review

A. Livingston (Univ. of Ulster, UK) and I. Livingston (formerly, Univ. College Falmouth, UK) here update their small book (new ed., 2003; 1st ed., titled Encyclopaedia of Graphic Design and Designers, CH, Dec'92, 30-1887) in the "World of Art" series. Using the same format as the 2003 edition, they provide fact-filled entries on graphic design and designers, adding some 200 new and updated entries, for a total of more than 750. New entries address Chinese graphic design, e-books, graphic novels, information design/graphics, and sustainable design. Updated entries include new books on the topic, new design projects, and awards won. Illustrations are plentiful (467 black-and-white and 78 color). A subject index in the front provides a valuable quick reference to the entries, e.g., "Art Directors," "Poster Artists," and "Typeface Designers." Equally valuable is the chart titled "The evolution of graphic design," located in the back. This chronological chart lists three categories of information: "art and design movements," "influential designers," and "developments and events." Using this chart, readers can easily review significant information from 1840 to the present. This high-quality publication will be indispensable for graphic design and art programs. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and above. N. M. Lambert University of South Carolina Upstate
