Booklist Review

Readers familiar with Rinzler's previous books (he's done making-of accounts about the Star Wars films, the Indiana Jones films, and Planet of the Apes) know what to expect: a big, glossy, lavishly illustrated, incredibly detailed, frequently surprising journey behind the scenes of a movie we think we know very well, until the author springs one surprise after another. For example: Did you know that, in Alien, there was originally going to be a love scene between Dallas and Ripley? Or that John Hurt was not the first actor to play the doomed Kane? Rinzler's chronicle of the production of Alien is not quite day by day, but it is a lot more detailed than your run-of-the-mill making-of book. It's even more comprehensive and revelatory than Nathan and Cartwright's Alien Vault (2011), which is no slouch by any regard. Once again, Rinzler has written not only an engaging tribute to a widely respected film, but also a treat for fans of books about moviemaking.--David Pitt Copyright 2019 Booklist
