CHOICE Review

Each article in this valuable, specialized overview of European media systems is devoted to a single country; the work includes about 85 percent of today's Europe, including Russia and eastern and central Europe. Articles are presented in outline form, facilitating comparisons among countries. Each article supplies a "National Profile," presenting historical and geographical background, and salient economic features of the communications industry. Next comes the section "Structure and Ownership," which treats all forms of print and electronic media (newspapers, magazines, television and radio, the Internet and related online media, and the telecommunications sector), then "Politics, Policy, Law and Regulation," statistical summaries from useful secondary sources, and bibliographical references. On the whole, the work presents a wealth of information and analysis that will help in the understanding of major policy issues in single countries and throughout Europe (e.g., the status of various industries, deregulation, conflicts between public and private forces, growth of electronic media). Contributors hold academic positions as teachers or researchers in European universities, or work as journalists or media specialists at research and regulatory agencies in Europe. ^BSumming Up: Recommended.
