CHOICE Review

Written as an introduction to modern through contemporary art, this edition is organized like the original iteration (CH, Jul'05, 42-6270), but continues the first edition's coverage to 2010. Four introductions offer different theoretical approaches to art and are important to understanding the main text. Each essay is signed in this edition. The typology provides fine legibility. This new volume also has been expanded to include 744 excellent illustrations, 510 of which are in color. The additional years of coverage are essential for studying the emerging art of today. Recommended readings at the end of each section, along with a general bibliography, are current and excellent. A helpful list of Internet sites and a glossary are also provided. Coauthors with Foster (Princeton) are Rosalind Krauss (Columbia), Bois (Harvard), and Buchloh (Barnard/Columbia). Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-level undergraduates through graduate students; general readers. R. A. Lockard University of Pittsburgh
