CHOICE Review

This is an excellent book detailing how graphic designers and product designers are currently using the Macintosh computer, with a variety of software packages, to create their work. Burns offers extensive interviews with nine designers to provide the first comprehensive look at how the ^D["Mac Revolution^D]" is altering the design professions. A number of step-by-step examples of work are provided, enhancing the value of the book, which is beautifully illustrated and produced, and contains a wealth of information for students, Mac novices, and professionals alike. Some of the text is a bit overblown, as in the Introduction when Junji Ito states: ^D["It is safe to say that this is the first time in history that humans have had anyone but God to accompany them in their creative work. Now they have the Macintosh, too.^D]" Alas, within ten years the Mac will be just one of many operating systems supporting design software. In a way this book is a celebration of the zenith of the Macintosh era. Because of that, it is well worth owning and reading. All levels.
