Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

What do Bic pens, Zippo lighters, Barbie dolls, and compact discs have in common? They can be found everywhere-and have become true icons of design. The stunning objects in this fully illustrated volume include furniture and household appliances, cars and toys, as well as many other design items which transcended their everyday utility to achieve iconic status during the twentieth century. Each object is examined in color photographs and illustrations of its use, together with a brief biography of the designer and additional fascinating information illuminating our contemporary design culture. Icons of Design offers a new way to see and appreciate the things we use every day. Book jacket.

CHOICE Review

Prestel Publishing has produced a chronological snapshot of design in the 20th century. An ideal coffee-table book with more than 200 beautiful full-color photographs and intriguing tidbits of design history, Icons offers a thumbnail-sized picture of the designers and a brief chronology of the designers' lives in the edge of the pages. The editors have selected both "high design" objects and "popular" objects. The "high design" objects range from Raymond Loewy's Streamlined Pencil Sharpener to Castigloni's Arco Lamp. The "popular" objects range from Barbie to the Zippo lighter. In total, 83 "icons" are presented, beginning with the Underwood typewriter from 1900 and ending with virtual reality from 2000. This book is similar in format and philosophy to Quintessence: The Quality of Having It, by Betty Cornfeld and Owen Edwards (1983). An alternative book for those who want a more complete chronology is Design of the 20th Century by Charlotte Fiell and Peter Fiell (1999), with some 700 color illustrations in an encyclopedic format. (Speaking metaphorically,Icons is the USA Today and Design is the New York Times of design history.) General readers; lower-division undergraduates; professionals; two-year technical program students. S. Visser; Purdue University
