CHOICE Review

Finnish Modern Design is an unusual example of an exhibition catalog in that it has ten substantial essays that occupy two-thirds of the text. Nine indigenous authors treat such aspects of Finnish design as furniture, glass, jewelry, and architecture in the context of issues of nationalism, internationalism, tradition, Romanticism, modernism, and new theory. Leading essays by Jari Ehrnrooth ("The Ambivalence of Finnish Culture") and Harri Kahla ("The Other Modernism: Finnish Design and National Identity") introduce the reader to the nature of these issues and demonstrate the ways in which Finnish modern design is, and is not, an expression of nationalism. In short, this is an important and insightful publication on a subject not been previously treated in English. Following the text there are fine color photographs of the 143 objects in the exhibitions, concise catalog information, selected histories of Finnish companies in the applied arts, and a bibliography.
