Library Journal Review

Having plundered the archives of the British, American, and French editions of Vogue magazine, Ross here presents hundreds of photographs, drawings, and essays chronicling the amusements of the international social elite during the 1920s, 1930s, and early 1940s. Their pressing concerns revolved about debutante balls, presentations at court, night clubbing, travel, sports, and interior decoration, and they managed to continue to live graciously despite wartime austerities. Famous Vogue contributors such as Cecil Beaton, Noel Coward, and Louis Horst are represented here by hundreds of illustrations and article excerpts. There's not a breath of scandal, just witty commentary or serious advice on how best to dress or behave. Evident care was expended in documenting the sources. An elegant volume for the nostalgia or fashion history buff that will make a pleasant addition to larger collections.-- Therese D. Baker, Western Kentucky Univ.
