Booklist Review
This lovely browsable is made up of more than 110 colorplates of vintage table radios, with only a two-page introduction and a sprinkling of old ads to distract us from the beauty of the little appliances. Photographer Robert Patterson has lit and lensed the colorful electric machines almost reverently, but he doesn't smother their ebullience at all. The radios' gay art moderne and streamlined designs, often integrating ingratiating details such as Mickey Mouse or Charlie McCarthy figurines, or masquerading as other kinds of furniture-lamps, microphones, pianos, and, inadvertently, toasters-glow all the more sassily against glamorously somber black backdrops. The publisher's usual high quality production job puts the final polish on a succulent apple of a photo album. Index (actually a checklist), list of contributing collectors, and bibliography.
