CHOICE Review

This small book by Haenfler (sociology, Univ. of Mississippi) provides a surprising amount of information and should inspire further research into the wide variety of subcultures that exist in the United States and worldwide. It is divided into eight chapters ranging from "What Is a Subculture" to "What Happens to Subculturists as They Grow Up?" Topics cover everything from bedroom cultures to hip-hop to skinheads to vampires; altogether these topics offer interesting insights into varied worlds. Useful for those studying history, sociology, cultural studies, media studies, anthropology, and criminology, this volume maintains that there are no typical subcultures and that many youth are just looking for cultures, lifestyles, or groups to which they may belong and relate. This readable book is enhanced with case studies and lists of further readings. It serves as a helpful introduction to a range of subcultural movements and touches on the way that social media affect subcultures and their growth. Anyone wanting to relate to youth cultures and anyone looking for interesting topics to research will find this book invaluable. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-division undergraduates and above; general readers. D. J. Turner Auraria Library
