CHOICE Review
Fashion Drawing is an accessible, visually oriented introduction to fashion drawing and illustration for students. Hopkins (Univ. of Southampton, UK) covers a variety of drawing styles, techniques, and approaches that are used in the fashion industry. All the basics a fashion student would ever need to know are addressed in chapters including "Drawing to Communicate Your Ideas," "The Fashion Figure," "Technical Drawings," "Colouring and Rendering," "Presentation Formats," and "Fashion Portfolios." Hopkins encourages personal expression and perfecting a unique drawing style through practice. The book starts by providing a brief history of fashion drawings from the mid-19th century though the 1990s. It then offers practical advice on topics such as selecting art supplies and sketchbooks, understanding fashion proportions, drawing from life, creating poses, and fabric rendering. It ends with a "Working with Ethics" section, intended to help students and educators incorporate ethical concerns into their work. The book's content is enriched by numerous color and black-and-white examples of different drawing styles by contemporary fashion designers and illustrators, photographs of fashion models, and many interviews with experts in the field including fashion designers and illustrators, design directors, and even a fashion career advisor. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-level undergraduates through graduate students interested in fashion design. Y. Cortes Skidmore CollegeThere are no comments on this title.
