MA dissertation: Interactive Digital Media

This paper addresses the audience experience of the aesthetic qualities derived from participation in an interactive art installation.Nowadays, an art installation based on the digital medium is not just a static installation, its main purpose is interaction. The audience has to participate in the creation of the art piece. As a result, the participant becomes part of the art piece. Therefore, the installation has now become a collaborative piece between the artist and the participant.the main argument I wish to explore is whether or not the interactive art installation provides a unique aesthetic experience through the process of interaction. Consequently, to define and reply to the question, the position of this paper is that the interaction element of the installation provides as experience that contains aesthetic qualities. The research is examined from the point of view of the artist and the participants, considering technological and psychological influences. Throughout the paper, references will be made mainly to the literature studied. Questions posed through case analyses of well known interactive artists will also be examined.
