The movement toward European integration has progressed so rapidly in the 1990s that much of the world does not realize what an important political and economic entity the European Union (EU) has become. The EU, which includes most of the countries of western Europe, is a free trade area about 40 percent larger than the US. There has long been talk of an authoritative encyclopedia on the EU; it is now here, and it is of excellent quality. The editor is a well-known specialist in EU affairs, and the advisory board a veritable who's who of EU specialists. The entries cover "concepts, issues, developments, institutions, policies, events, negotiations, treaties, national interests, and personalities related to European integration." About 100 key entries written by leading experts are signed; the other 600 or so are not. There are extensive cross-references between entries and a comprehensive index. Some entries have bibliographies. The growing importance of the EU makes this volume essential for nearly all universities and colleges, and even for larger high schools.
