Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

Designers structure their portfolios following their instincts and according to their own professional development. A portfolio principally contains print designs which are used to plan, organize and document the designer's personal experience, work samples and skills.

This is precisely the object of this unique book: to present a selection of samples of the best works by young designers from all over the world. Fresh, inventive and full of original and groundbreaking ideas, Portfolio Design aims to offer not only visual delights but also valuable references and solutions for those who are looking for inspiration to produce a stunning portfolio of their own.

Excerpt provided by Syndetics

"As creative people, our ideas are our business. Our purpose is to not only create things but also to be able to display them in a fresh and creative way, expressing clearly the meaning of the projects so that we can gain the trust of our next client or collaboration. Whether you are an industrial designer, an illustrator, a graphic designer, a photographer, a web designer, or in any other creative career; whether you are aspiring to join a design course, are working in the creative business or already as a senior designer--the key to delivering your ideas in a professional context is your presentation. In the same manner, your portfolio is your best ally. While putting mine together, I struggled with the quantity of choices I had to make. I believe I am not the only one who was ever in this position, at the beginning of a professional career. Looking back at your own work is not easy--it may take time for your eyes to be well trained enough. For me, the hardest choice in the creation of my own portfolio was the selection and arrangement of projects. According to my experience, no matter what field you specialize in, the projects selected for the portfolio should not only reflect your achievements in the past but also express your ambitions about the future. Designing is about making choices, and self-critique is essential in order to renew your work and aesthetic choices. Depending on whom you plan to introduce your works to, you might want to employ different sets of skills to seize their eyes and surprise them. Therefore, you cannot fill your portfolio with every single design you have made since you started. It might hurt your feelings to leave a project aside--not matter how much you loved it--in order to include one that suits the overall presentation better. For example, you might prefer not including too much print design work, if you are applying for a screen design job." From the preface by Amaury Hamon, graphic designer & illustrator, Lille (France).
