Library Journal Review
Reminiscent of Katharine Harmon's You Are Here: Personal Geographies and Other Maps of the Imagination, which would be a wonderful companion read, this title gathers creations by cartographers that highlight places, trends, and ideas such as Christmas in New York; a three-day trip in Washington State; and place-name meanings in Canada, the United States, and Central America. Some of the maps use modern syntheses, such as combinations of images and data from satellite photography and Google OpenStreetMap. There is minimal narrative accompaniment to the images, but the maps are primarily only briefly captioned. With no table of contents and an index that is arranged by creator, the book is effective as a look at maps and cartography as a form of modern expression rather than as a research resource. VERDICT Finding aids would have made this title valuable to social researchers; as it stands, it's an enthralling work of art. © Copyright 2016.
