Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:
As the first comprehensive encyclopedic survey of Western architectural theory from Vitruvius to the present, this book is an essential resource for architects, students, teachers, historians, and theorists. Using only original sources, Kruft has undertaken the monumental task of researching, organizing, and analyzing the significant statements put forth by architectural theorists over the last two thousand years. The result is a text that is authoritative and complete, easy to read without being reductive.
Includes bibliographical references (p. [613]-684) and index.

CHOICE Review
Kruft's last major book is one of the most significant contributions to architectural theory published in this century. It is a broad, comprehensive survey with particular emphasis on theories influencing the 20th century and on other viewpoints given little publication in English, such as German aesthetic theory of the Goethe period. It is a daunting tome for students; but, with 163 pages of endnotes, 207 illustrations, 71 pages of bibliography, and an extensive index, it will become an essential tool for researchers of architectural theory. Libraries holding Joseph Rykwert's The First Moderns (CH, Dec'80) and anything by Alberto Perez-Gomez should acquire this valuable book on architectural theory.
