Library Journal Review

Rizzoli produces quality architecture books-well-designed works with striking visuals and effective text that place architecture in context while quietly saying, "This work deserves a book." Moss's work deserves such treatment because it is jaggedly of our time: twisted metal, glass in arrangements that look lethal, concrete serving as cheap permanent mass, and wood as a random accent. His work is sprinkled around Los Angeles and Culver City, CA, with ideas for projects in other locales, including Vienna, Havana, and London. Collected here are his most recent projects, including plans for the Queens Museum of Art in New York. Architect Richard Meier offers up a nice introduction, assuring us that Moss (director, Southern California Inst. of Architecture) is now taming the anger apparent in his harsh designs and making some good, imaginative buildings. The virtues of the book are the simple drawings by Moss, which evolve into line drawings, site plans, and photographs of finished work. Good explanations for the finished buildings and their neighborhood context help out. Rizzoli's third collection of his "Buildings and Projects," this is recommended for larger or specialized architecture collections, especially those that have the first two volumes.-David Bryant, New Canaan P.L., CT (c) Copyright 2010.
