CHOICE Review

This extensive, well-organized work, edited by Price (London Knowledge Lab, UK), Jewitt (Univ. of London, UK), and Brown (Mobile Life Centre, Sweden), is not for the faint of heart. The discipline-specific content, highly sophisticated research, and germane terminology (e.g., "Heideggerian," "dystopic," "haptic") will put general readers at a disadvantage and may challenge interested professionals outside the field. Fortunately, a glossary in one chapter helps to bridge this gap in expertise. The volume is divided into four parts: "Introduction to the Field of Contemporary Digital Technology Research," "New Digital Technologies: Key Characteristics and Considerations," "Research Perspectives for Digital Technologies: Theory and Analysis," and "Environments and Tools for Digital Research." Part 3 is the gold mine, identifying emergent and established theories along with theoretical origins, key concepts, major studies, and restrictions. Throughout the text, scholars make projections on the future of digital technology and identify areas of weakness, and challenges and tensions that must be addressed in order to realize digital technology's full potential. The book is heavily footnoted; readers will be able to delve further into any topic covered. The various images provided will allow researchers to better visualize concepts discussed. Case studies appear in several of the 30 chapters. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Graduate students, researchers/faculty, and professionals. B. G. Turner Faulkner University
