Library Journal Review

If you watch all the DVD behind-the-scenes extras and director voice-over commentaries, then writer, director, and producer Gaspard's indie-film romp is for you. Part how-to, part expose, it features directors like Whit Stillman, Tom DiCillo, and George A. Romero and dissects films such as You Can Count on Me, Capote, Bubble, Personal Velocity, and subUrbia. In 23 interviews, filmmakers divulge the nuts and bolts (often stripped and welded) of the creative process. This book will not write your screenplay for you; actors, agents, directors, and producers will not materialize in your den wielding mojitos amid casual banter about 20-minute tracking shots and sugarplum nominations. But in a humble and honest fashion, it will get you thinking about the mechanics of filmmaking. Through this humanization of the process, an aspiring auteur may find kinship and motivation. A joy to read; recommended for all libraries and writing collections.-Ben Malczewski, Ypsilanti Dist. Lib., MI (c) Copyright 2010.
