CHOICE Review
For an international traveling exhibition sponsored by the Library of Congress and the Vitra Museum of furniture, Weil am Rhein, Germany, here are high-quality pictures and sensational picture-text relationship. There are pictures of famous furniture, toys, exhibitions, promotional material, informal snapshots, stills from films, comics, advertisements, exhibitions for the federal government, and much more. The work features six major essays, each with extensive notes, by scholars, designers, academics, and architecture/design writers. The introductory essay surveys the Eameses' accomplishments. Other essays deal with their famous prototype house, films, exhibitions; there are two "photo essays" of models and furniture in the Vitra Museum. The Library of Congress has Eames photos, drawings, films, slides, manuscripts, and ephemera, all of which are represented here. Throughout, the Eameses' joint contributions are seen in business, aesthetics, science education, politics, and culture. Appended are short appreciations, a list of films, and an excellent bibliography. This book has wonderful pictures complementing Pat Kirkham's scholarly Charles and Ray Eames: Designers of the Twentieth Century (CH Nov'95). An art collection should include both for a balanced view of the "dynamic duo" of American postwar design. General; undergraduate (including two-year technical program) through professional. W. L.
