500 ## - GENERAL NOTE | |
General note | There has been much speculation about the extent to which mobile telecommunications companies have committed themsleves to developing the third generation (or 3G) of mobile phone technology. If 3G is to be a success, then it is likely that it could bring many changes to many societies over the next few years. Penetration of the 2G mobile phones have arrived at saturation point especially form many of the Western European and Asian-Pacific markets so it is time to call on the next step. As transmission speeds increase to a maximum of 2Mbps, we may be able to achieve many things on a mobile handset that we have only ever done on a desktop PC before. The idea of convergence means that divergent products and services could all come together creating an environment which would introduce more hybrid ways of doing things. The internet, the personal computer, interactive television, personal digital assistants and the mobile phone will all come together to give consumers more choice. |
